
Mangadu situated near kundrathur houses kamakshi amman temple which attracts people 24/7, kamakshi amman first stepped here and later married shivan in kancheepuram, according to the legend once parvati devi closed shivan eyes playfully as a result of this the world turned dark while shivan turned red in anger so he cursed her to stay away from kailash so parvathi left the place and to please shivan she came to mangadu(maa+kadu=mango forest in tamil) under started her penance, she rested her left leg in blazing fire and folded her right leg while raising her left hand above her head holding a jabamaalai(prayer beads) and her right hand showing mudra of deep meditation, this posture of kamakshi amman(thapaskamakshi) can be seen in unjal madapam in the temple.

The temple apart from having blessed by the feet of kamakshi it was followed by the divine feet of her son sri adhi shankarar after finishing her penance kamakashi amman left mangadu and married shivan in kancheepuram but the fire ignited by her was still burning in the place and made the place unfit for cultivation and livelihood of people was affected and on hearing this adishankarar visited the place and cooled the earth with sri chakram made of special herbs and installed in front of kamakshi amman and even today performing a kunguma archanai to the srichakram is known to be very auspicious in the temple.

In the moolasthanam kamakshi amman resides in standing posture with parrot in her hands and a gentle happy smile in her face and in front of her the srichakram is installed on a peedam resembling the petals of a lotus people offer kungumam and saree to mahameru which is the tradition followed here.If you visit the temple on a day choose the same day on the coming week(if u visit on monday make sure u visit the temple on monday of the following week)and always carry two lemons to the temple.The temple also has sapthamatha sanidhi in the praharam.The temple is situated near kundrathur and 24kms from chennai near ponamalle, the temple will be open from 6am-1.30 pm and 3pm - 9.30pm on monday,wednesday,thursday and saturdays and on sunday,tuesday and friday 5am-10pm, bus routes 17B from brodway, 17BCT from koyembedu,66 from tambaram will connect devotees to mangadu.
